Sales Engineer (Thermal - Bioenergy) - Africa
The client is an investment manager specializing in renewable energy investments in Asia and Africa, managing over $800m in committed capital. The client is established to provide energy solutions to commercial and industrial customers, focusing on customer-led, technology-agnostic strategies targeting solar PV, battery energy storage, and biomass to steam opportunities, with a broader scope covering the Middle East and Africa.
Opportunity My client, is seeking an experienced Sales Engineer to support the development of renewable energy projects in Africa. This role focuses on thermal solutions, primarily biomass-fueled steam projects, and includes CHP, cooling, biogas, solar thermal, and other relevant technologies.
Job Role / Responsibilities Reporting to the Thermal Technical Manager, the Sales Engineer will:
- Design and propose concepts and solutions based on client requirements during feasibility and proposal stages.
- Conduct energy and demand analysis.
- Create concept design drawings and budget documents including OPEX and CAPEX.
- Estimate current generation costs and potential savings.
- Calculate CO2 reductions.
- Prepare presentations and responsibility matrices.
- Ensure technical requirements are aligned between client, supplier, and BECS.
- Collect data, review technical offers, and build proposals to support business development until project execution.
- Define battery limits and tie-in boundaries between all parties.
- Prepare technical appendices, including specifications, delivery commitments, and responsibility matrices.
Responsibilities
- Data collection and analysis.
- Preliminary design and sizing.
- Obtaining quotes and technical inputs from suppliers.
- Clarifying requirements with suppliers and clients.
- Preparing budgets and financial model inputs.
- Preparing presentations and initial layout concept designs.
Key Skills / Competencies / Experience
- Background in boilers and industrial heating and cooling processes.
- Experience in energy audits and energy optimization.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience and higher education in energy and environmental fields.
- Experience in designing, sizing, and evaluating technical solutions for biomass boilers, biogas digesters, solar thermal, vapor absorption chillers, ammonia chillers, and biomass power plants.
- Knowledge of different biomass feedstocks and their impact on boiler combustion, emission control, and handling.
- Knowledge of biogas digestion and feedstock impact on generation and technology selection.
- Strong presentation skills and English proficiency.
- Excellent communication skills to ensure client requirements are met by supplier offers and project delivery.
Qualifications
- Engineering degree (preferably with Honors in Mechanical/Thermodynamic Engineering) from a reputable university.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a results-driven team player.
- Excellent written English (French, Arabic, or other languages spoken in Africa is a plus).
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD or similar CAD software, 3D modeling is a plus.
- Proven design experience of thermal projects in emerging markets for solid-fired steam boilers and cooling solutions in an industrial setting.
- 3-5 years of experience as a sales engineer or similar role.
- Passion for the decarbonization industry in Africa and contributing to project delivery.
