Business Development Lead - Renewable Energy Projects (DRC)

Job Title: Business Development Lead
Location: Lubumbashi or Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Business Line: Renewable Energy Development
Team: Business Development
Reporting to: Group Business Development Senior Manager

Objective:

We are seeking a dynamic and self-driven Business Development Lead to drive the development of renewable energy projects in the DRC. This role is pivotal in identifying, creating, and closing new energy projects while leading the project development cycle from feasibility to financial close. You will play a critical role in shaping the clean energy landscape in the DRC, engaging with government entities, donors, and local communities to ensure successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Identification & Development:
    • Identify and create renewable energy projects suitable for development in the DRC.
    • Lead feasibility assessments, including technical, financial, and risk evaluations.
    • Develop financial models, proposals, and business cases for energy projects.
  • Project Execution & Coordination:
    • Oversee project development activities, including permitting, land acquisition, and interconnection processes.
    • Collaborate with internal teams (Engineering, HSES, Legal, and Financial) to ensure project success.
    • Maintain project pipelines, track progress, and provide regular updates on key KPIs.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Negotiation:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, regulatory bodies, local communities, and donors.
    • Lead negotiations for partnerships, joint ventures, and project acquisitions.
    • Represent the organization in high-level discussions with stakeholders.
  • Strategic Management:
    • Monitor and improve the financial and operational performance of projects.
    • Provide input on commercial and legal structuring to optimize project returns.
  • Travel:
    • Frequent travel within the DRC as needed to support project development and stakeholder engagement.

Skills and Experience:

  • Professional Background:
    • Over 5 years of experience in the DRC, preferably in business development, energy, or a related field.
    • Strong expertise in fundraising, project finance, and financial/legal structuring.
    • Proven ability to manage complex projects and build strategic partnerships.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with solar PV and battery systems, and experience with tools like HOMER or PVsyst is a plus.
    • In-depth understanding of project management practices, including planning, cost control, and procurement.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Self-motivated, collaborative, and results-driven with a strong work ethic.
    • Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including governments, donors, and utilities.
    • Passionate about transforming Africa's power sector and advancing clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions.
  • Languages & Communication:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French and English.
